PROTECT MASSACHUSETTS

FROM THE DANGERS OF iGAMBLING

At NAAIG, our mission is to advance the interests of our members and strengthen the industry through advocacy, education, and engagement.

Now, Massachusetts is considering legalizing online casino gambling (iGambling) - and it’s vital that lawmakers hear from the people who see the impact up close: families, educators, and local advocates across our state.

Why iGambling Puts Massachusetts at Risk

  • Internet gambling is uniquely addictive. Unlike traditional gaming, iGambling is always on - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - accessible to anyone with a phone. The constant availability makes it far more difficult for people to stop, even when they want to.
  • It’s a solitary, isolating behavior. iGambling removes the human connection found in regulated, in-person environments. Players gamble alone, unseen, and without social support, making it easy to spiral into destructive habits unnoticed.
  • No one is immune. Evidence from Massachusetts shows that even the children of gambling health advocates are gambling online. This is not a distant or hypothetical risk - it’s happening right here in our communities.
  • Warning signs are already flashing. Massachusetts saw a 120% increase in problem gambling helpline calls from 2022 to 2023 -mostly driven by online sports betting. Expanding into iGambling would only deepen this growing crisis.
  • What’s at Stake. Legalizing iGambling would normalize gambling on every phone and tablet in Massachusetts - turning bedrooms, classrooms, and breakrooms into potential betting venues. Once that door is opened, it’s nearly impossible to close.
